The artists and works in this exhibition explore the relationship between economics and consumer culture and reveal the immense impact that socioeconomics has had on the art of the contemporary generation, as well as on our culture at large. This is especially important considering the recent financial crisis and the constant bombardment from the media on luxury, fashion and glamour. The mixed messages felt in the collision of class and culture proves that we are all under the influence of finance and fashion.

Museums collect not for themselves but for an audience. Our choices are purposeful and steered by a variety of criteria, such as the museum’s mission and role in the community, ideas or artistic practices that are specific to the region, and the important figures in the creative life of a community. Collecting Is Curiosity/Inquiry illustrates two sides of the collecting coin: curiosity and inquiry. Curiosity and inquiry are guiding principles for artists and curators alike, and are equal factors in building a collection and curating an exhibition. This exhibition highlights more than twenty works from the permanent collection, mostly recent acquisitions, in order to illustrate how the museum thinks about building the collection and the formal and thematic connections that can be made among artworks.

I’m humbled to be included with Justin Bower, The Clayton Brothers, Monica Cook , The Date Farmers, David French, Charles Irvin, Patrick Jackson, Joel Kyack, Candice Lin, Chad Person, Jon Pylypchuk, Colin Roberts, Robert Williams, Eric Yahnker, creature props and effects from Amalgamated Dynamics Inc. (Oscar winner Tom Woodruff Jr. from Pumpkinhead, Terminator, Predator, and the Alien Franchise, among many others)

Show runs August 31st – October 12th, 2013 at Torrance Art Museum, with an opening on Saturday August 31st, 6 – 9pm

About the Work
“The deflating white whale symbolizes a cyclical end to obsession. Much like a beached whale, which dies when it’s
non-buoyant mass collapses under its own weight, human obsession
frequently spirals out of control until its bearer can no longer support
its mass. …it inflates until full and then slowly deflates, collapsing
inward on itself, and without witness, the cycle begins anew.”

Similar to its original installation in the desert of Marfa, TX, The
Dying Gaul installed in landlocked Colorado will be left out to dry. The
sculpture will fill the east wing of the Philip J. Steele Gallery along
with photographs of the piece in situ.
